Skype to Offer Free Wi-Fi to Travelers

Getting trapped in the airport this holiday season will soon become a little more enjoyable.
From Dec. 21 through Dec. 27, Skype, which is now owned by Microsoft, will be offering free one-hour Wi-Fi access to third party hotspots in over 50 airports across the U.S. As long as you have Skype on your Mac or PC, or the Skype Wi-Fi app on your iOS device, you will be able to take advantage of the company’s promotion.
In 2009, Google ran a similar promotion to give travellers free Wi-Fi access in airports. While Google’s offer included only 47 airports across the U.S., it was significantly more generous, running from early November to mid January.
“Skype is helping people maintain these meaningful connections this holiday season from wherever they may be,” Skype representative Linda Summers said in a statement on the company’s website.
“A voice or video call via Skype when you can't be together for the holidays is the next best thing to being there."
According to the company, accessing the free Wi-Fi requires little more than loading the app, enabling Skype Wi-Fi Access and hopping onto a participating Wi-Fi public hotspot. The free Skype Wi-Fi promotion will be available in most major U.S. airports, including JFK International Airport, Nashville International Airport and San Francisco International Airport. A full list of participating airports is available on Skype’s website.
At all other times of the year, Skype Wi-Fi is available at over 1 million Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide, starting as low as six cents per minute, depending on the particular hotspot.
