Despite a grim economic outlook, new research shows IT professionals are optimistic about their future.
In a survey of IT professionals conducted by staffing provider Modis, 89 percent of the respondents said they are happy at their job, and two-thirds intend to stay with their current employer.
Nearly half of the more than 500 IT professionals surveyed also are expecting a raise next year.
"IT professionals are generally happy in their current roles and are cautiously optimistic about what 2012 may bring," said Jack Cullen, president of Modis.
According to Modis, IT professionals' current happiness with their job may be the result of satisfaction with key components of their roles. Seventy percent of those surveyed report having a boss who doesn't micromanage, and 62 percent said they have good salaries and benefits.
The survey also identified several areas of information technology that are expected to see the most growth over the next five years; they include cloud computing, software as a service, security and mobile solutions.
For those in charge of IT hiring, "finding technologists with experience and skills in these areas is critical for their IT departments," Cullen said. More than a quarter of those surveyed said they expected hiring to increase.
Overall, those surveyed felt fairly secure in their jobs. Forty-two percent said they wouldn't be concerned about losing their jobs should another economic meltdown occur.
Cullen said the survey reveals some key insights that can benefit both IT professionals and their bosses.
"Employers can retain top talent through more than just a competitive salary," Cullen said. "Workers value autonomy and room to manage their own projects, opportunities to grow as professionals and have a voice in the status of the project, as well as flexible work arrangement."
