M2M Market Poised to Explode
If you are thinking about getting that new iPad or tablet, you are hardly alone. Research by Compass Intelligence, a global consulting and market analytics firm, projects is predicting explosive growth for the M2M and connected-device market in the next few years.
According to the study, the M2M (or "machine-to-machine") and connected-device market is expected to reach 87 million endpoints by 2015, with an annual growth rate of 25 percent.
"Machine-to-machine" in its simplest form can be described as technology that can support machines communicating either through wired or wireless networks. Examples of M2M products include tablet computers, portable navigation devices and digital photo viewers.
"We have entered an era where every device that can benefit from being connected via a cellular connection to the Internet will be connected to the Internet; and that this hyper-connectivity coupled together with emerging cloud services will propel society into new ways of interacting with the world around us," James Brehm, senior strategist of Compass Intelligence, said in a statement.
Industries where noticeable and quick return on investment can be seen will adopt these technologies much quicker, perhaps over the next 12 to 18 months, the company indicated.
