Temporary IT Hiring on the Rise
Fewer companies are planning additional permanent IT hires over the next three months; however, more are looking to add more temporary positions, according to new research.
In its quarterly IT Executive Outlook survey, IT staffing and services company TEKsystems found that 40 percent of IT leaders expect to increase their temporary IT headcount in the next three months, up from last quarter’s 36 percent. Only 38 percent of IT managers said they’re planning new permanent hires, down three percent from the previous quarter.
"Continued economic uncertainty makes contract workers more appealing," Tania Lavin, TEKsystems market research manager, said in a prepared release. "IT leaders would rather hire consultants on a project-to-project basis than ramp up full-time teams without specific initiatives in mind."
The survey also examined specific needs IT leaders have. As in the past, enterprise architects and cloud architects were reported to be the most difficult to find. This quarter, IT managers also noted difficulty in finding security specialists and business intelligence specialists.
"Due to high demand, professionals with these skills do not need to actively seek new opportunities," Lavin said. "They are recruited, and get their choice of challenging work and appealing compensation packages."
Additionally, the study looked at the difficulties that some industries have in attracting top IT professionals with certain specialties. Financial services firms indicated they have more difficulty filling database administrator positions, while IT companies said they struggle to find systems administrators, business intelligence specialists, business process engineers, network architects and .NET developers.
TEKsystems, a technology staffing and services company, partners with the Inavero Institute to conduct a quarterly survey of nearly 3,000 IT leaders representing all industries, regions and company sizes.
